Excavating the evidence for Jesus : the archaeology and history of Christ and the Gospels / by Titus M. Kennedy

No other figure has impacted history like Jesus. Yet today, he's often seen as a mythical character whose legend increased over time. So what does the historical and archaeological evidence say about Jesus? Archaeologist Dr. Titus Kennedy has investigated firsthand the discoveries connected to Jesus' birth, ministry, crucifixion, and resurrection. He has visited and excavated where Jesus walked and examined the artifacts connected to Jesus' life. Here, he presents an up-to-date and comprehensive overview of the research and findings that illuminate the historicity of Christ as presented in the Bible. Excavating the Evidence for Jesus progresses chronologically through the Gospels, noting the many relevant archaeological, historical, geographic, and literary findings. As you read, you'll be able to decide for yourself whether the evidence confirms the existence and story of Jesus, and determine whether the Gospels are worthy of being approached not as legends, but as history. Further, you'll gain a deeper understanding of the historic basis of Christianity, a richer knowledge of the ancient world, and an evidence-based perspective on the reliability of the Bible.

Fallible heroes : inside the Protestant Reformation / by Stephen Fortosis and Harley T. Atkinson

To the casual observer the major contributors of the Protestant Reformation include a select few--Martin Luther, Ulrich Zwingli, John Calvin, and perhaps Philip Melanchthon. However, the movement might have easily perished in its infancy were it not for a very unique and courageous company of more obscure individuals who worked together across continental Europe during the sixteenth century--Martin Bucer, Wolfgang Capito, Conrad Grebel, Felix Manz, Matthew and Katarina Zell, Menno Simons, John Oecolampadius, Andreas Karlstadt, and Heinrich Bullinger, to name a few. This book draws the reader into three often-ignored elements of the Reformation: first, the interaction the reformers had with each other through dialogues, letters, debates, and colloquies; second, the weaknesses, blemishes, and misdeeds of the reformers (in addition to their strengths and accomplishments); and third, the contributions of the lesser-known reformers in addition to the prominent ones.

Interpreting Scripture across cultures : an introduction to cross-cultural hermeneutics / by Will Brooks

The refugee that has come to your church, the pastor of the immigrant church in your town, and you yourself all come before the same Bible, even the same verse, and walk away with completely different understandings and applications. In an increasingly globalized and multicultural world, how can we learn to see beyond our own cultural influences, understand those of others, and learn from each other in order to better understand and apply the word of God? How do we stay faithful to the text when our contemporary cultural perspective is so different from the original author's? This book will enable you to understand the common pitfalls and dangers related to cross-cultural hermeneutics while also equipping you with principles and real-life examples for how to interpret Scripture in such situations. Additionally, given the fact that our world is increasingly digitized and people are less and less likely to read, we will consider the issue of oral hermeneutics and how those who can't read or choose not to read can interpret Scripture faithfully.

Pentecostal hermeneutics in the late modern world : essays on the condition of our interpretation / by L. William Oliverio

In Pentecostal Hermeneutics in the Late Modern World, L. William Oliverio, Jr. offers a series of forays into the places where late modernity and Pentecostalism have met in interpreting God, the world, and human selves and communities. Oliverio provides a historical, constructive, and ecumenical approach to understanding current trajectories in Pentecostal interpretation as he engages a variety of philosophers and theologians. Together, these essays point to a way forward for Pentecostal hermeneutics in the context of the late modern world.

Mormon hermeneutics : five approaches to the Bible by the LDS church / by Jeffrey S. Krohn

Bible readers are often preoccupied with themselves. At times they neglect the original, ancient context of the biblical writings. The novelty of the modern is leveraged to trump the ancient. Mormon hermeneutics seems to say more about the modern LDS church than any ancient biblical meaning. Positively, the LDS is to be applauded for their emphasis on the living out of their faith. However, through various approaches to the Bible, the LDS Church seems to neglect the ancient horizon of the biblical text. Any interpretation of the Bible, LDS or otherwise, should be held accountable. This book is an attempt to categorize Mormon hermeneutics and utilizes numerous hermeneutical voices from the field of philosophical hermeneutics.

The rise and fall of liberal Protestantism in America / by David R. Carlin

When I speak of liberal Protestants, I have in mind those Protestants who feel free to depart from classical Protestantism (the Protestantism of the Reformers) in order, as they see it, to keep Christianity in step with the best of secular wisdom-secular wisdom that often includes attacks on Christianity. Over the past 250 years, there have been three great attacks on Christianity: deism, agnosticism, and the sexual revolution. And so, beginning with Unitarianism more than 200 years ago, liberal Protestantism has adjusted to these attacks by dropping more and more of traditional Christian doctrine, until today the more advanced liberal Protestants are only barely distinguishable from atheists.

Global Christianity : current trends and developments / by Vebjørn L. Horsfjord, Sven Thore Kloster, Gina Lende, and Ole Jakob Løland

Over the last few decades, Christianity's center of gravity has moved from the global north to the global south. While church buildings in Western Europe are being closed or sold, new megachurches are filled with believers in Africa and Latin America. Charismatic movements practice the Christian religion in new ways, challenging the established churches and society at large on all continents. This scholarly examination of contemporary World Christianity takes a fresh perspective on Christianity as a cultural, political, and social force in our time. It provides up-to-date regional surveys, gives ample attention to the fastest growing branch of Christianity, the Pentecostal movement, and focuses sharply on Catholicism, which with a wide margin is the world's largest denomination. Furthermore, it explores how the Christian religion accommodates as well as challenges political, social, economic, and cultural developments.

Christobiography : memory, history, and the reliability of the Gospels / by Craig S. Keener

Demonstrates the reliability of the canonical gospels by exploring the genre of ancient biography. The canonical gospels are ancient biographies, narratives of Jesus's life. The authors of these gospels were intentional in how they handled historical information and sources.Building on recent work in the study of ancient biographies, Craig Keener argues that the writers of the canonical gospels followed the literary practices of other biographers in their day. In Christobiography he explores the character of ancient biography and urges students and scholars to appreciate the gospel writers' method and degree of accuracy in recounting the ministry of Jesus. Keener's Christobiography has far-reaching implications for the study of the canonical gospels and historical Jesus research.
